THis species is questionably distinct from ferox Blandford. In Wood’s treatment (2007) ferox is found from Mexico through Colombia. I have seen specimens from Central Brazil that ‘fit’ within ferox so the 2 are not geographically distinct. While some specimens show the characters cited by Wood in his description, these do not appear to be distinctive.

This species were removed from synonymy with X. ferrugineus by Kirkendall and Jordahl (2006). Some neotropical records of identified here as Xyleborus ferrugineus (identifications made prior to 2006) probably refer to this species.
