Wood (1982:905) states that this species is only distinguished from H. eruditus by frontal characters. This also is similar to what he states for H. parallelus.

Wood (1982) notes that ‘at least one cotype of Stephanoderes bolivianus Eggers in the Schedl collection is a misidentified specimen of opacus.’ Bright (2019:159) treated dolosus Wood as a synonym. I am treating them as separate for the time being.

Wood (1982) suggests that this species may ‘hybridize’ with seriatus Eichhoff, based on the collection of typical obscurus and seriatus and intermediate forms collected from Guatemala. Bright (2019:156) treats seriatus as a synonym.

Specimens reported from Brazil by Atkinson & Flechtmann (2021:28) are actually H. marginatus Johnson.
