This species is very similar to Phloeotribus pseudoscabricollis Atkinson. In addition to the differences noted in the original description, the wide geographic separation (and unknown host for pseudoscabricollis) supported the new species description. More recently of material of P. pseudoscabrilcollis has been collected in Texas from Zanthoxylum fagara and , both in the Rutaceae. In the event that new material is collected between southern Texas and the Lakes States, this situation should be revisted. (THA 2012).

This species is very similar to Phloeotribus liminaris (Harris) and may be conspecific.
