Wood & Bright (1992:417) used P. spinatifer Wood 1988. Bright & Skidmore (2002: 63), treated spinatifer Wood as an unjustified replacement name for a Schedl species and restored spinatulus Wood 1984 which had been previously proposed and overlooked.

Blackman’s description gives the holotype locality as ‘Yauco, Puerto, Rico’ and cites other paratypes from Haiti. He also cites the holotype as having type label ‘56414’. That specimen, however, is from Haiti. An allotype is mentioned in the description but there is no specimen in the USNM so labeled.
