Bark and Ambrosia Beetles of the World

Apparently all specimens assigned to this species by Wood & Bright (1982:1059) and Noguera & Atkinson (1990:466) are actually M. aztecum Wood. I have compared the types and they are similar, but distinct.

Bright & Torres (2006) synonymized praeustum Eggers (known from the Caribbean) with mali Fitch (eastern North America). I am unconvinced and believe that they may be distinct.
