As currently understood this species is distributed widely in the southeastern United States and also throughout lowland humid areas of the Neotropics. The presence of this species in Central and South America mainly follows identifications made by S.L. Wood. It is entirely possible, however that these records may refer to other superficially similar taxa (particularly poriferus Chapuis and hians, Chapuis) which have recently been synonymized by Kirkendall (2017) with segnis Chapuis. these specimens need to be re-examined. Also, P. rudifrons (Tabasco, Mexico), P. subcavifrons (Brazil) and P. foraminosus (Brazil) have been treated as synonyms by Schedl (1972).
